Chrome → AI → Obsidian: Capturing ideas using Web Clipper

Capturing anything with Web Clipper + AI

Dear Scholar,

Capturing information from the web into Obsidian is easy for scientific papers by using Zotero or Paperpile. But for less "formal" content, such as essays, YouTube videos, or lecture notes, this does not work, even though much learning occurs through these platforms.

This is where the Obsidian Web Clipper comes in. It is a browser extension that captures any website into your Obsidian vault using a template-based approach and AI integration. It is incredibly flexible because, unlike other note-taking apps, it can be fully customised to match your system. In this week's article, I explain the details and use-cases:

A key component is the AI integration. It works by sending the content of the website or video you want to capture to AI (e.g. ChatGPT) along with custom prompt(s). The reply is then saved in your notes with one click. For example, if you save a website for "later reading" or as a source note, you can add a summary, extract some quotes, or add tags automatically using AI. For academic reading, I use the Web Clipper to build reading lists.

Final Call: The Effortless Learning Accelerator

Last week, I announced a hands-on cohort-based course for about 15-20 highly motivated people who want a full & permanent transformation of their knowledge management by combining the infinite storage of computers with the creativity of the human brain. A new, future-proof way to learn and the result of 4+ years working and experimenting with Obsidian in academia.

This pilot group will be hand-picked and matched in skill, domain, and intention to guarantee results, not just provide an online course.

If this sounds like you, please sign up in the next few days to get an invitation.

👤 Who: It is designed for knowledge workers, students, academics, or journalists who want to research vast and complex topics and synthesise their own ideas.

🟡 Details - You'll learn how to:
- Never forget anything you've read
- Find any note, reference or idea even years later
- Use your notes to produce publishable writing, backed up by references
- Build a system to manage ideas and facts that you can use for years
- Customise Obsidian to your needs
- The note-taking system I developed over 4+ years of experimentation

🔧 Tools: You will get access to a pre-configured Obsidian vault with 20+ fine-tuned plugins and bases, which makes the learning curve as gentle as possible. This template can be used for professional and private knowledge management. Templates for third-party plugins to import websites, videos, academic papers, and digital books into your system with one click

📆 Start date & duration: Over ~4-6 weeks starting in February 2026

🎥 Format: A mix of videos and small-group live lectures. Weekly assignments/goals to ensure your progress. Private community for support and accountability.

👥 Community: ~15-20 committed people who want transformation & results, not just another online course. I hope to find a cohort of folks with similar backgrounds to learn from one another and hold each other accountable. The goal is that no questions remain unanswered and that you feel confident using the knowledge management system in this course for many years to come.

I will start reaching out to participants next week. Please sign up in the next few days.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Obsidian gets an AI agent Dear Scholar, While I absolutely love AI, I always found that the AI agents underwhelming. They were slow and made many mistakes. However, this week I was diving deep into the Google's Scribe plugin which enables the use of an AI agent within Obsidian. For the first time, I feel that the AI agent was truly useful because it either did something that I wouldn't be capable of or would be too lazy to do. Going forward, I think Gemini Scribe is a must-use plugin for...

Academic Writing with AI Dear Scholar, No topic is as hotly debated as whether and to what extent AI should be permitted in academic writing. Plagiarism is a significant issue, but so is the increasing number of papers being produced (and the implicit assumption that using AI produces papers faster and thus lowers their quality), which is overwhelming the peer-review system. And lastly, a more subtle notion of not fully understanding the science when outsourcing some of the writing, which is...

Can AI Detectors improve Academic Writing? Dear Scholar, Almost everyone I speak to is using AI for academic writing. Some more, some less. To balance AI writing with understanding, I have developed the atomic sentence method and thought hard about the ethical implications. But after a few AI-enhanced writing iterations, it is hard to keep track of how much AI you actually used. This is where AI detectors come in. These tools can help you gauge whether your writing relies too heavily on AI...
