Tutorial: Styling Links with Obsidian

Dear Scholar,

The Academic Knowledge Management Webinar 2.0 just concluded with over 200 academics joining. During this and previous webinars, people repeatedly asked me one thing about my Obsidian vault: How do I style the links in different colors, and what do they mean?

Your browser does this, for example, by displaying links in a different color after visiting them. In Obsidian, we can go one step further and display links that link to different content differently. In my system, annotations are yellow, papers are blue, and so on. This helps tremendously with navigating your vault. Here's how to do it:

The system works by first defining classes of note like papers, images, tasks etc with a plugin called "Supercharged Links". Then we can use the "Style Settings" plugin to make links to these notes appear differently from the default. It's simple and as I described in the note-taking course, profoundly useful.

Webinar Recording and New EA Community

If you missed the webinar last week and want to still benefit from it, you can get a recording. The recording is divided into 33 short chapters and can be accessed in the Effortless Academic Community. This allows you to comment and ask questions at any time:

If you want to join the EA community, grab a ticket from the website and follow the instructions for access.

Automation: Obsidian's missing feature solved Dear Reader, Most people who start managing information digitally with Obsidian run into the same problem: Their notes resemble a collection of summaries, rather than a functioning network of knowledge. Think of your notes like a house: A collection of planks and boards is not yet a house. It is the way these elements are connected that creates a house. How quickly you can build a house and how stable it is depends on the quality and uniformity of...

Conceptual Literature Review Dear Reader, A literature review starts with reading. But what is reading other than unpacking packaged information into a set of ideas that link together in meaningful ways in your head? What if we could start the process with the mindmap? This is what I call a conceptual literature review. Given a few papers, it uses AI to extract concepts and claims and create an interlinked information network. The output is an Obsidian vault with 100s of connections and...
